Maintenance Works
Program, Januari 2017-Juli 2018

Rekan-rekan sekalian,

Maintenance Works
Program, January 2017–July 2018

Dear friends,

We warmly invite you to join a year filled with workshops, assemblies, working groups, residencies and an evolving exhibition of propositions, notes and first drafts. With our year-long programme Maintenance Works we hope to create a space in 2017, Cemeti’s 30th year, in which we can collectively experiment, test ideas, make mistakes, and even fail together, as we think through various models of instituting; sketching alternative possible futures for Cemeti – Institute for Art and Society.

Maintenance Works is the first programme under the new team at Cemeti through which we want to take a moment for public reflection. Instead of rolling out a fully developed program, we decided to use 2017 to recalibrate, envisioning Cemeti as being “down for maintenance” (like a website), whilst being open to the public. By conceptually taking the institution offline, we hope to create time to ask basic questions about where we are, and where we want to go, beginning with:

“What are the key social and political urgencies in the city, the country, the region today?”
“What is the social and political agency of art practice?”
“What can institutions (of art) do?”
“What is a gallery for?”
“How do we work together?”

Maintenance Works has so far included Maintenance Works 1st Draft an exhibition consisting of several initial “propositions” in Cemeti’s gallery and domestic spaces. We also organized the first Assembly, entitled Assembly #1: Reproducing Residencies, a three day event with a focus group discussion, workshops, lectures and talks about the problematics and possibilities of the residency model. In April and May 2017, the Netherlands based design duo Collective Works (Karin Mientjes and Peter Zuiderwijk) have redesigned Cemeti's entrance space, opening up the previously private kitchen -now used as a working and meeting space-, creating new furniture elements to work, reflect, eat, cook, display and more, as well as a public library and archive. Collective Works presented their research process and thoughts in the exhibition The Sum of (Almost) All Things. Since January, we have been working together with TUHANTU design collective on the redesign of Cemeti's visual identity, which includes various public "experiments" as well as an exhibition project. Cemeti's final, new visual identity and website will be launched in February 2018.

Maintenance Works 2nd Draft runs from July 2017 until July 2018 and consists of a series of exhibitions called "Berbagi" ("sharing" in Indonesian language), for which we have invited artists and groups with collaborative practices to do a project in Cemeti, whilst learning from their way of working. "Berbagi" exhibitions so far are: Museum of the Ordinary Things by Eko Prawoto and Ruang Politik Pertama Bernama Rumah by Dito Yuwono with collectives Barasub, Laras music research collective, RAR Editions, Studio Batu and Sewon Screening. The next "berbagi" exhibition is planned for December 2017, after the final presentation by the artists participating in Cemeti's Artist in Residence Program, Period #2 2017.

Through Maintenance Works we hope to sow the seeds for our future programmes, artists' commissions and models of working. We hope you join us!
